FAQ

Q: What makes Home Chicken different from grocery-store chicken?

Three things. First, our birds are pasture-raised — they live outside, eat real food, and grow at a natural pace. Second, the chicken you receive was alive less than two weeks ago; grocery chicken often sat for two-plus weeks in a warehouse before reaching the shelf. Third, you pick the delivery day and we ship on ice, so it arrives at peak quality, not after a forklift detour.

Q: Where do you ship?

Currently to and around Utah, including California, Washington, and Colorado. We restrict to states we can reach in 1–2 days via UPS so the cold-chain stays intact. If you're outside our zone, sign up for the waitlist on the homepage.

Q: What days do you ship?

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Never Friday or Saturday — UPS doesn't move ground freight on weekends, and your chicken deserves better than a hub holdover. Pick a delivery date at checkout.

Q: Does my chicken ship frozen or fresh?

Vacuum-sealed and flash-frozen for transit, packed in an insulated box with dry ice. Move it from the box to your freezer when it arrives, or pop it in the fridge to thaw for tomorrow's dinner.

Q: How long does it take to thaw a whole bird?

24 hours in the fridge for a 3.5–4 lb whole bird. Cuts thaw in 8–12 hours. Never thaw raw chicken on the counter — fridge or cold-water bath only, food-safety basics.

Q: What if my package shows up warm or damaged?

Send us a photo within 24 hours of delivery and we'll replace the order at no cost or refund you in full — your call. We don't make you fight UPS on our behalf. (Dry ice will often be partially or fully sublimated on arrival — that's normal and doesn't mean the order is compromised. As long as the chicken itself is cold and firm, you're good.)

Q: How does the subscription work?

Pick the products you want, pick a cadence (every 1, 2, or 4 weeks), and we ship automatically. Save 10% on every recurring box. You can skip, pause, swap items, or change the delivery date any time from your account — no calls, no "please tell us why you're leaving" forms.

Q: Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, in two taps from your account. We'd rather you skip or pause than cancel, but if you want to go, we don't put any hurdles in your way.

Q: What's a Quarter Flock Share / Whole Flock Share?

Our equivalent of a bulk meat share — a big freezer-fill order of pasture-raised birds at the best per-pound price we offer. Quarter is 8 whole birds, Whole is 12. Includes free shipping. Best for households that cook chicken regularly and want to stop thinking about it for two or three months.

Q: Are your birds organic?

Our birds are pasture-raised on non-GMO feed, never given antibiotics or added hormones, and raised by a small ranch we know personally. Whether they carry the USDA Organic seal depends on our current supplier — see each product page for the current certification.

Q: What can I do with the bones and giblets?

Make stock. Roast the carcass with vegetables for an hour, then simmer for four to six hours with onion, celery, carrot, peppercorns, and bay leaves. You'll get a gallon of liquid gold that you'll wonder how you ever lived without. We're working on a broth bone box for subscribers — let us know if you want in.

Q: Do you offer gift cards?

Not yet!
